Vaultwarden reimplements the Bitwarden server API in Rust, so the official Bitwarden browser extensions and mobile apps work against a server that idles in tens of megabytes of RAM with a SQLite database.

It is the standard way to self-host passwords, with a few honest caveats:

  • It is an unofficial, community implementation — track its releases when Bitwarden clients update.
  • You are now the custodian of your family's vault: backups and TLS are non-negotiable.
  • Features like organizations and TOTP storage work well.

If you self-host one security service, make it this: the clients are excellent and the server is nearly maintenance-free.
