Outline is a team knowledge base that actually feels good to write in: a fast Markdown-friendly editor, nested collections, real-time collaboration and search that finds things. Many teams describe it as the self-hosted Notion-for-docs they were looking for.

Self-hosting requires Postgres, Redis and an external authentication provider (OIDC or Slack/Google login) — there is no simple built-in username/password path, which is the most common stumbling block. Pair it with Authentik or Keycloak and the requirement becomes a feature.

Best for teams that want beautiful documentation without handing it to a SaaS.
